HD format groups are wooing the porn industry to help their claims for dominance.

Although the media industry try’s to pretend it isn’t there, porn has always been the main driving force behind new technologies. Print, photography, CD-ROM, the Internet, videocassette and DVD have all been pulled into the mainstream consciousness, by the activities of ‘adult material’ merchants. It’s a massive market, that still gets ignored – when last did you see adult material listed as a sub-category for the DVD charts or even added to the annual sales of DVD in mainstream industry statistics?
But all that is changing with Hi-Def. After a report showing the HD DVD is strong in the adult market the BD world has responded with the announcement that Vivid are releasing porn in Blu ray with the release of the tw"Debbie Does Dallas … Again. Should they be called Blu-movies???

U&S see possible victory for BD

In and interview with Home Media Magazine, Jim Bottoms, the erstwhile co-founder of Understanding & Solutions co-founder Jim Bottoms says that the early indicators of the market since the launch of the PS3 show a stronger possibility for BD becoming dominant in the HD disc ‘battle’.
It’s been our contention all along that both formats would almost be neck and neck, with Blu-ray having stronger industry support on the hardware side and content side and HD DVD getting out first and having lower price points. Each group has got its advantages, but what really changes the picture is PS3. It is
poised to be in virtually 25 million to 35 million homes in the next two to three year.” He thinks this leads to a strength in BD for the future.
”I would be absolutely amazed if the format war goes on much further than mid-2008. If you look at what happened in 2006, 80% of what has sold through is Blu-ray. In 2007, [Blu-ray] will be at least that percentage again, but it won’t be a million players we’re talking about. We’re probably looking at something like 8 million units selling through this year across all product types and formats, so by the end of 2007, moving into 2008, it’s possible that 5% or 6% of U.S. homes will be owning a high-definition playback device. And about 80% of those devices will be Blu-ray. “
Whilst not gainsaying Jim Bottom’s research, others have pointed that if you predict the outcome on Philip’s track record in consumer media formats instead, that would indicate quite the opposite. Whilst the CD and Video CD was a success, CD-I as a games format didn’t , V2000 failed against VHS, DCC failed against MD, Multichannel MPEG audio for DVD failed against Dolby.

    Hacker hacked off

Despite the reaction from the industry that dismisses the impact of the cracking efforts of Backup HD DVD. Muslix64 the hacker the hacker who broke the DRM behind HD-DVD and Blu-Ray that says that the system is broken and some thoughtlessness in its design has contributed to the downfall of AACS.
“I know many people of the industry try to cover up this breach, by saying I have only poked a tiny hole in AACS, but it is more serious than that. Only the future will tell, “ he says.
“The AACS security layer is almost the same for both HD-DVD and Blu-ray, so they are both busted for good. The only extra security layer is for the Blu-ray format, and it's called BD+. BD+ is not there yet, and I don't know when it will be. May be my "exploits" will speed up the adoption of BD+, we will see...”
Muslix64 exploited  the volume key to crack the system he says
“I care about volume keys, because by using volume keys instead of devices keys, I totally bypass the revocation system. There is no "volume key revocation". There is content revocation, but I really doubt they will ever use it. If you use device keys, they can revoke them. Having the volume key means that you can decrypt title's keys (or CPS Unit key in the case of Blu-ray) and then you can decrypt the media file without problem. I was shocked to realize the volume key was not protected in memory!”
A lesson that Mary Queen of Scots, learnt at the cost of her execution, was that you should never put your trust in ‘unbreakable’ encryption. And for the last half a millennium, experts have been making the same mistake. The industry must accept that encryption is there to keep honest people honest and little else.

Mexico/ Poland product transfer by Technicolor

In a double blow to the US and European disc manufacturing capacity, Thomson had announced that it is closing its Wales, UK and Luxembourg plant sand transferring manufacturing to Piaseczno in Poland . It is also closing its Illinois manufacturing and packing plant and cutting 50% of the 1200 workforce at its Camarillo plant. The ‘restructuring’ moves production to the larger, more highly efficient facilities that can also take advantage of lower running and staff costs in these areas.
Local press in all three areas headline the decisions as they will make a major impact on the employment levels in the local areas.
